When we moved to Baltimore - for the third time - in 2004, it wasnt long before I was involved in the Jazz scene. A full-time job at the popular contemporary Jazz station confirmed that I was supposed to be mingling with the artists who have continued the grand tradition of greatness. Baltimore is legendary for Jazz talent - and I felt that connection because my hometown of Philadelphia is also known for an amazing array of artistry from that genre. One of those young cats breathing life into seasoned music - and creating his own - was Theljon Allen. Whenever I would see him take to the stage, the crowd would light up. And it caused more smoke to emit from those who shared the stage with him. Especially during our frequent Jams in Charm City. Ive seen musicians beef up and show out way more than they WERE playing before Theljon took a solo. Ask anybody at Club 347 on Calvert Street about that! The echoes of the past emanate from that trumpet...it cant help but jump from those notes he plays. When I saw Theljon a while back with Lafayette Gilchrist and The New Volcanoes, I whispered to my concert partner: "Look, young Miles!" For real. Theljon Allen has learned from the best (inspiration: Clifford Brown); PLAYED with the best (Jill Scott/Dennis Chambers/Janet Jackson & more) - and now hes ready to be heard by more. "Universal Language" will re-introduce you to the trumpet. Youve thought you heard it all - welcome to the 2013 edition! This young man has become one with his instrument - and the Flying Wallenda notes that youll hear will remind you of why you fell in love with Jazz in the first place. First Place = Theljon Allen. Tracks from the CD and his musical journey so far - Tuesday, January 29th. The music starts at one p.m. "Young Miles" is at TWO p.m. Eastern :-D
