Psychologists intially believed only combat soldiers became overwhlemed by horrible incidents. Research has proven anyone exposed to crime, murder, death, and injury could be suspectible to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Rates of PTSD amongst Police Officers are 4 - 6 times higher than the general public. Some researchers report rates of PTSD as high as 25% among Police Officers which is well above the 3-5% of the general public. On Wednesday June 12 at 10 pm, Join me and my guest, Colonel and former Chief of the New Castle County Delaware Police Department Scott McLaren, as we discuss the reasons behind these staggering statistics as well as how Police Officers can recognize the signs and symptoms of PTSD. We will also discuss the dynamics of a critical incident for a Police Officer and what services are available to help combat PTSD. Scott McLaren is currently the Director of Public Safety for Delaware Technical Community College. He is Colonel and former Chief of Police for the New Castle County Delaware Police Department. He is one of the founding members of the New Castle County Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He is a graduate from Wilmington University and the FBI National Academy 203rd.
